- The special course on school health care and nursing at the Hakodate campus is a training institution to foster school nurses that have the necessary requirements to enter university as well as those who have a nursing license (including those who will be receiving one).
- The duration of the course is 1 year, with admission openings for 40 people.
- Graduates who have a nursing license and who fulfill the credit requirements are eligible to apply for and obtain a school health care and nursing level 1 certification.
- This special course seeks for the following type of people:
- Person who has the vocation and passion for school health care and who loves children
- Person who has a strong will to engage in school health care, and to contribute to the education and culture of the region as a school nurse in the future
- Person who has a strong will to learn and has the basic academic abilities to obtain the necessary specialized skills and knowledge in his/her specialization
Principle and Aim
The aim of this course is to enable students to always have an interest in mental and physical health problems of young school children and provide the necessary abilities to actively resolve these problems. Moreover, the other aim is to provide students with health counseling.

Educational Guidance until Graduation, Characteristics of the Curriculum
- The first series of exams for public school teachers will be given at each prefecture 3 months after entering the university in April (given on the 1st Sunday in July in Hokkaido).
- Students will go through a 4 week practicum at elementary and junior high schools (not the same as practicum at one’s alma mater) in Hakodate City from mid-August (those who passed the first series of exams will be writing the second series of the exams during the practicum and number of students write the exam every year).
- Therefore, the curriculum for the 1st term will be composed and scheduled taking into consideration the exam and the practicum.
- The 2nd term will consist of courses and seminars geared toward the research on the student’s graduation thesis and visiting various schools.
Schedule for the Year
1st term
- Entrance ceremony (beginning of April)
- Medical examination/ first portion of the orientation for new students (right after entering university)
- Commencement of classes for 1st term (April to end of July)
- Second portion of orientation for new students (mid-May, one night two days stay)
- Exam for public school teachers (beginning of July to end of July)
- Final exam of 1st term (end of July to beginning of August)
- Summer vacation (August-September)
- Nursing practicum (mid-August to Mid-September)
2nd term
- Commencement of classes for 2nd term (beginning of October to end of January)
- Exchange of opinions concerning the nursing practicum (beginning of October)
- Presentation on the nursing practicum (mid-November)
- Visiting schools (mid-November to beginning of December)
- Deadline for the submission of graduation thesis (end of January)
- Final exam (end of January to beginning of February)
- Presentation of graduation thesis (mid-February)
- Spring break/ Graduation Ceremony (mid-March to end of March)
